The sacred lakes of Gosainkundra sit like jewels in the rugged landscape north of Kathmandu. Though this region is easily accessible, it remains relatively un-crowded compared to other trekking routes in Nepal. Though elevations aren’t as strenuous as other climbs, hikers are exposed to risky terrain and snowy landscapes. Many passes leading from Helambu are often snow-packed and difficult to navigate.
Neighboring Tibet, Langtang is home to ancient monasteries and prayer stones are built upon scenic overlooks. The mythical Yeti has reportedly been seen in wooded areas, and rhesus monkeys, red pandas and black bears also claim this area as natural habitat. The Langtang National Park is covered with dense forests of oak, maple, pine and rhododendron trees. Timber and firewood are provided to residents of neighboring districts. Accommodations can be sparsely furnished, but they are comfortable and locals are eager to share freshly cooked meals and home-brewed alcohol. |
